Police Representatives from 11 Countries Meet in Zagreb ahead of Summer Tourist Season

The Croatian Police presented to police representatives from 11 countries in Zagreb on Thursday a plan of measures and activities aimed at ensuring a safe sojourn for foreigners vacationing in Croatia this summer.

Such presentations are held since 2004. This year's meeting pooled police chiefs and officers from France, Germany, Austria, Italy, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Serbia.

Croatian Police chief Marijan Benko said last year's tourist season passed without incidents. He said cooperation was aimed at ensuring a faster flow of people across border crossings but not at the expense of security, which he added was why it was important to obtain information about ill-intentioned people from other police forces.

During the meeting, the police forces of Croatia and Hungary signed a memorandum of agreement based on which four Hungarian officers will stay in Zadar from July 19 to August 16, helping their Croatian colleagues to communicate with Hungarian tourists.

Last year, Croatia recorded 9.419 traffic accidents in which foreigners were involved, including 35 fatalities. The Maritime Police pressed 682 misdemeanor charges against foreigners and requested that criminal charges be pressed in 13 cases due to violations of the law on sea fishing.
