Croatian Tourism Minister Gari Cappelli's initiative to position tourism better in EU institutions was supported by 13 EU member states,  the Tourism Ministry said in a press release on Wednesday. Thirteen member states -- Italy, Portugal, Spain, Cyprus, Romania, Slovakia, Lithuania, Latvia, Malta, Poland, Greece, Bulgaria and Slovenia -- have already sided with Croatia, the press release said.

According to the press release, Cappelli launched strong lobbying efforts several months ago with EU members states to help better position tourism in EU institutions. The sector that employs 24 million EU citizens is generating 10% of GDP and most definitely deserves to be positioned better in the EU, the ministry said in the statement.

Cappelli also received the support of the European Parliament which recommended it to the European Commission, asking that new credit lines for tourism be set up, the press release said.

The initiative was also supported by the UNWTO.
