Zagreb mayor lights first Advent candle, Advent in Zagreb starts
Zagreb Mayor Milan Bandic on Saturday lit the first candle on the Advent wreath at the Mandusevac fountain in the city centre, thus marking the beginning of the Advent in Zagreb event.
"Zagreb is again opening the door to the magic of Advent. As we await the most beautiful Christian holiday, Christmas, we are opening the door of our city to a festive atmosphere, joy, fun, good and unity. Our Zagreb is truly becoming a pre-Christmas fairy tale," Bandic said, among other things. After lighting the first candle on the Advent wreath, Bandic and his associates walked through the Zrinjevac park to King Tomislav Square, where the biggest ice rink in this part of Europe was opened by Culture Minister Nina Obuljen Korzinek and Zagreb Tourism Board (TZGZ) head Martina Bienenfeld.
The large number of Zagreb residents and their guests who attended the opening of Advent in Zagreb are a guarantee that this year's Advent in Zagreb will be visited by numerous guests. The city centre is adorned with Christmas lights and decorations.
The Office of the President this year again joined Advent in Zagreb, with President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic opening Advent at the Villa Prekrizje, where visitors will be able to see folk customs from all over Croatia.
Advent in Zagreb, to last until 7 January 2020, will feature numerous events to take place at a number of locations in the city, inspired by The Nutcracker ballet, ecology and culture.
TZGZ head Bienenfeld has said that Advent in Zagreb offers the best of what the city has in tourism, catering industry and culture and that this year the capital city expects more visits than last year, all the more so because as of January 1 Croatia will be chairing the EU. (Hina)
