Tourism sector employers, unions suspend collective agreement

Employers and unions in the tourism sector have agreed to suspend the collective agreement for the hospitality industry until the competent authorities revoke restrictions which have been imposed due to the coronavirus pandemic and which have been preventing employers from honouring the agreed terms.

The Croatian Employers Association (HUP) said on Saturday that its section for hospitality and tourism had signed with the national union of workers in the tourism sector and the union of tourism workers in Istria, Kvarner and Dalmatia an agreement putting put of force the collective agreement signed on December 20, 2019 and its annex, signed in February 2020.

It warns that due to the coronavirus pandemic, activities of employers in the sectors of hospitality and tourism have been suspended, which is why they are unable to meet their obligations defined by the branch collective agreement.

Eduard Andric, leader of the national trade union of workers in tourism and the services sector, said that it was important to keep domestic workers in the hope that a part of this year's season would nonetheless be salvaged.

He expects employers, notably HUP members, not to cancel in-house collective agreements but regulate mutual rights and obligations in such a way to save jobs.

Marina Cvitic, leader of the Trade Union of Istria, Kvarner and Dalmatia, said they expected the government to urgently adopt new measures to alleviate the impact of the crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic on the tourism sector.
