Large Croatian camping sites Valkanela in Vrsar, Cikat in Mali Losinj and Strasko in Novalja on the island of Pag have been voted by Slovenian campers as Croatia's best camping sites, according to the avtokampi.si website.

These camping sites were awarded at the 10th Croatian Camping Congress held this week in Sveti Martin na Muri. The 'Naj Kamp Adria' or best Adriatic camping site award is granted to the best camping sites in Croatia and Slovenia by this Slovenian tourism website.

This year there were more than 200 camps competing for the award and they received a total of 34,000 votes during the entire season. Valkanela, Cikat and Strasko won the most votes, the website said.

The website's editor Klemen Hren said that this year was a record season for camping sites.

"Even though due to poor weather the start of the season in June didn't look promising, everything improved with the high temperatures in July, August and September which led to the excellent results. This year there were 2% more campers in Croatia and 3% more in Slovenia compared to last year and it is interesting that 54% of overnight stays of Slovenian tourists in Croatia were in fact in camps," Hren said.
