Minister: Rewards, allowances for Olympic gold medallists total more than €500,000
Tourism and Sports Minister Tonči Glavina on Thursday commended the performance of Croatian athletes at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, stressing that when put together, rewards and allowances for Olympic gold medallists amount to more than half a million euros.
This will be made possible by changes to the Sports Act, the minister said, pointing to the government's activities aimed at improving the financial status of top athletes."Just before the Olympic Games, one of the first moves of the new government was to increase by 50% rewards for top sport achievements. The winners of gold medals at the Olympic Games will be rewarded with €41,000, silver medallists will be given €26,000 and bronze medallists €18,500. Depending on their results, our athletes will receive 2-3 million euros more, owing to these legislative changes," he said.
Croatia is one of the few countries that has a so-called permanent sports allowance, which amounts to the average salary and which Olympic gold medallists receive after turning 45 for the rest of their life, Glavina said, noting that with the latest legislative changes this has also been made possible for the coaches of Olympic gold medallists, after they turn 55.
