The Croatian coastal town of Makarska was awarded the title European Town of Sport 2024 in the category of towns with up to 25,000 inhabitants at a ceremony held in Brussels on Thursday. The title is awarded by the European non-profit association ACES Europe.

The criteria for the title were sports infrastructure, recreational and sport programmes for citizens of all age groups, promotion of sports, experience in organising prestigious sport competitions and competitive sports and clubs, as well as sport financing.

Accepting the title, Makarska Mayor Zoran Paunović said that it would do very much for the town's promotion and be part of the changes that the town authorities want to introduce, primarily with regard to abandoning the concept of mass tourism and turning to sustainable tourism, focusing on specific demographic groups.

The town's nomination for the title was followed, in October this year, by a visit of ACES Europe delegates, who concluded that Makarska has the highest per capita investments in sports and stands out in terms of a very high level of involvement of the local population in sport activities.
