Investing in the green and digital transition, people, facilities and products in world and Croatian tourism are key for its sustainable development, Tourism Minister Nikolina Brnjac has said on the occasion of World Tourism Day, observed on 27 September.

The marking of World Tourism Day 2023, organised by the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), will bring together in Riyadh on Wednesday and Thursday representatives of over 100 member states, state and tourism leaders from the public and private sectors.

Brnjac will represent Croatia which, like other UNWTO member states, will mark Tourism Day with events and programmes organised by tourist boards and destinations in cooperation with bar and restaurant owners, hoteliers and others.

The UNWTO designated "Tourism and Green Investments" as the main theme of World Tourism Day 2023 to highlight the vital need to deliver investment for projects that work for People (by investing in education and skills), Planet (by investing in sustainable infrastructure and accelerating green transformation) and Prosperity (by investing in innovation, technology and entrepreneurship).

"In Riyadh, I will present our tourism management reform, which rests on measurable data and the best practices, whereby we can contribute to global sustainable tourism efforts," Brnjac told Hina, adding that thereby "Croatia is becoming a leader in sustainable tourism."

At a ministerial panel on Thursday, she will present the government's strategic steps towards sustainable tourism, including the Sustainable Tourism Development Strategy, the new Tourism Act, and new investments in tourism.

"A record amount in grants will start a new investment cycle in line with the strategic goals, and we will ensure the continuation of the green transition and investments in quality via a sectoral programme of incentives," the minister said.

In Riyadh, Brnjac will also visit the Sustainable Tourism Global Center, which Saudi Arabia launched in 2021. Its goal is to help accelerate the sector's switch to zero emissions, implement nature protection and community support initiatives, support travellers, governments and the private sector so that tourism can grow, create jobs and contribute to climate targets.

In a note of congratulations on the occasion of World Tourism Day, Croatian Tourist Board (HTZ) director Kristjan Staničić emphasises the importance of new investments and the activities which destinations are undertaking to be successful in tourism, while preserving resources and nature at the same time.

Our new strategic marketing and operational plan for Croatian tourism until 2027 contains promotional and development guidelines and activities, he says, adding that the HTZ encourages all tourism operators to take targeted and coordinated actions to build a society and tourism which care for nature and the environment.
