Gov't sends final proposal to amend Tourism Act to Parliament

The government on Thursday sent the final proposal to amend the Tourism Act to Parliament for a second reading to ensure sustainable management of tourism at all levels.

The proposal to amend the law was discussed in Parliament on 12 October, and during the drafting of the final proposal all comments, suggestions and opinions presented in the discussion were considered and those that contributed to the quality of the document were adopted, said Tonči Glavina, State Secretary at the Ministry of Tourism and Sports.

The proposals and improvements proposed by the ministries were accepted, he added.

The proposed law will establish an institutional framework for tourism management, tools for monitoring and ensuring sustainability based on clear and exact data, as well as tools for destination management, and will give new management powers to local tourism boards.

Glavina said that the new law more clearly defines the role of tourism boards and local and regional government units in policy making and implementation, which will be able to make decisions important for the tourism development of a municipality, city or county based on expert knowledge.

The law is also the legal basis for the adoption of a sectoral incentive program that will enable targeted support for entrepreneurs in tourism, which for the first time also includes nautical tourism.

The aim of the law is to provide prerequisites and tools for managing the development of tourism towards sustainability, Glavina concluded.

The law is expected to enter into force on 1 January 2024.
