Croatia's Minister of Tourism and Sport, Nikolina Brnjac, will be in New York from 13 to 19 July to attend the High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, which is taking place under the auspices of the United Nations Economic and Social Council, the Ministry of Tourism and Sport told Hina on Wednesday.

As part of the Forum, Brnjac will attend a panel on Social Development Goal 11, entitled "SDG 11 and interlinkages with other SDGs –Sustainable cities and communities", where she will present Croatia's contribution to achieving this goal.

"At the High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development we will be discussing effective and inclusive recovery measures to address the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on SDGs and practical policy guidelines for the full implementation of the goals under Agenda 2030," Brnjac said before leaving for New York.

She noted that the European Commission had assessed in its progress report that Croatia was making timely progress in pursuing nearly all sustainable development goals.

"We have made progress according to all indicators of contribution to achieving the sustainability goals, in particular those related to fairness, productivity and macroeconomic stability and nearly all indicators related to environmental sustainability. All these indicators are important to us as a tourist country, notably with regard to achieving the goals of sustainable tourism development, without which there can be no further progress. I am looking forward to presenting to my ministerial counterparts our new law on tourism, which will create a legal framework for ensuring sustainability and enabling tourism management," the minister said.

During her stay in New York, in cooperation with the UN World Tourism Organisation, the Ministry of Tourism and Sport will organise a high-level round table on economic, social and environmental sustainability in tourism, at which Brnjac will present the new law. The President of the UN General Assembly, Csaba Kőrösi, and the President of the UN Economic and Social Council, Lachezara Stoeva, are expected to address the event.

On the last day of her stay in New York, Brnjac is due to present the second Voluntary National Review of the implementation of the UN sustainable development agenda, namely Croatia's progress in implementing all 17 sustainable development goals through 38 indicators for tracking progress in achieving the goals. In addition to Croatia, 39 other countries will also present their voluntary national reviews.
