Croatia reports 7.1% increase in tourists staying in commercial accommodation in 2018

Last year 18.7 million tourists stayed in commercial accommodation in Croatia, an increase of 7.1 percent over 2017, and generated 89.7 million bed nights, up 4.0 percent, the National Bureau of Statistics (DZS) said on Friday.

The bulk of bed nights in commercial accommodation, or 83.2 million, were generated by foreign tourists, which is an increase of 3.7 percent over 2017. The number of foreign tourist arrivals rose by 6.7 percent to 16.6 million.

Domestic tourists generated slightly over 2 million arrivals and nearly 6.5 million bed nights, which are increases of 10.0 percent and 8.3 percent respectively.

Tourists from 70 countries visit Croatia

Tourists who visited Croatia in 2018 came from 70 countries. Germans were traditionally the largest group, with 2.8 million arrivals (up 6.4 percent) and 20 million bed nights (up 2.3 percent), accounting for 24 percent of all foreign bed nights. They were followed by Slovenians (who accounted for 9.0 percent of bed nights), Austrians (8.5 percent) and Poles (7.3 percent).

The largest number of bed nights was generated in private accommodation, or 43.4 million. This type of accommodation accounted for the largest share of bed nights in commercial accommodation, of 49 percent. It was followed by hotels (20.4 million bed nights, up 4.0 percent) and campsites (18.3 million bed nights, up 0.6 percent). (Hina)
