Croatia's Minister of Tourism and Sport, Nikolina Brnjac, attended a meeting of the Education, Youth, Culture and Sport Council in Brussels on Tuesday.

The Council discussed sport diplomacy, promotion of European interests and values in the world, and adopted conclusions on innovation in sport. Innovation in sport is expected to boost citizen participation in sport and physical activity, improve socio-economic development through sport, and address the present and future challenges, making the sport sector more sustainable and resilient.

"We consider it of particular importance to make use of technology, digital tools and innovation in the field of education and upskilling. At national level, we can already see broad cooperation between sport and other sectors, as shown by measures and activities under the National Sport Programme 2019-2026, including those relating to the National Sport Information System," Brnjac said, also highlighting the importance of boosting cooperation between sport and tourism.

During debate on sport diplomacy, Brnjac noted that sport has always been a strong tool to convey positive messages and the power of sport should be used to establish communication and cooperation with all other areas and at all levels. She cited such values of sport as promoting social integration, preventing all forms of discrimination and encouraging physical activity among the general population.

Brnjac concluded by saying that through the adoption of an overarching EU strategy member states would be able to strengthen their national sport diplomacy strategies, which could provide added value at EU level.
