The top-class camping site Lanterna outside the northern Adriatic town of Porec is offering so-called glamping or luxury tents this summer.
Glamping, a coined word made from the words glamorous and camping, is a trend that has been developing globally over the past ten years or so. Lanterna has set up on its grounds a glamping village consisting of seven luxury tents and a swimming pool.
"In order to improve the quality of our products and services, this year we have directed a portion of our investment of 37 million kuna in Lanterna at the mobile home section, a new restaurant and glamping tents for which there is growing demand," said Davor Benko, vice-president for sales and marketing of the Valamar Riviera company which owns the camp.
Valamar Riviera has invested 330 million kuna in preparations for this year's tourist season. The largest portion of that amount, 250 million kuna, was invested in the luxury family Valamar Isabella Island Resort on the islet of Sveti Nikola off Porec. The rest was invested in other hotels, tourist apartment complexes and camping sites in Istria, Dubrovnik and on the island of Krk.
Lanterna is a member of the elite association Leading Campings of Europe, which brings together the 40 best campsites in Europe. It has received a five-star rating from the German motoring association ADAC and the Dutch motoring association ANWB.
