Croatia should not be a mass tourism destination but a sustainable destination of added value whose citizens will feel the benefits and not disadvantages of tourism, Tourism and Sports Minister Tonči Glavina said on Thursday.
Speaking to reporters after a government session, he said that one should not strive for additional growth in the peak season but rather in shoulder season.
Quite the contrary, it would be good if figures in the peak season, notably in July and August, were slightly lower or roughly at the level of the current ones "because, objectively speaking, there is no room for further growth," Glavina said.
"For a number of years one of the main strategies of the tourism sector was the growth of accommodation capacity but considering space limitations and those related to social and human resource sustainability, as well as many other things that have to do with the quality of life of the local population, we have reached the optimal numbers and we don't need further growth," Glavina said, adding that one should work on increasing the number of visits and overnight stays in shoulder season, as well as on increasing the attractiveness of continental and less developed tourist destinations.
As for figures for July, he said that they were similar to last year's, that financial indicators were good and show a 4% increase in receipts issued and a 12-13% increase in their value.
