Adriatic Croatia was the most popular region in the European Union for short-term rental accommodation booked through online booking platforms in the third quarter of last year, Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, said on Wednesday.
In the period from July to September 2023, 23.7 million overnight stays were booked in Adriatic Croatia via online booking platforms. Adriatic Croatia is followed by the Spanish region of Andalusia with 14 million overnight stays and the French region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur with 12.2 million overnight stays.
Eurostat data refer to NUTS2 regions, administrative regions in the European Union that are used for statistical purposes and most often do not coincide with the actual regional structure within the member states. Croatia is divided into four regions: Pannonian Croatia, Northern Croatia, Adriatic Croatia and the City of Zagreb.
There are three levels of NUTS regions in the EU: NUTS1 can have between three and seven million inhabitants, NUTS2 between 800,000 and three million and NUTS3 between 150,00 and 800,000.
Among the 20 most popular NUTS2 regions in the third quarter of last year, six are French, five are Spanish and Italian respectively, two are Greek, and one each is in Croatia and Portugal.
According to Eurostat data, during 2023 guests spent 678.6 million nights in short-term rental accommodation in the EU booked through Airbnb, Booking, Expedia Group or TripAdvisor. This corresponds to a 13.8% increase compared with 2022.
