Slovenia: Croatia continues to be safe destination for Slovenians

Croatia continues to remain an epidemiologically safe destination for Slovenians, the spokesman for Slovenia's government, Jelko Kacin, and one of the country's leading infectologists, Mario Fafangel, said on Tuesday, explaining that the situation was similar in both countries.

Addressing an extraordinary press conference, Kacin said that 13 new cases of coronavirus were identified in Slovenia on Monday, of which 6 cases were imported from abroad. Kacin said that a statement by Health Minister Tomaz Gantar about Croatia as a potentially epidemiologically dangerous destination for Slovenians was "not thought out sufficiently," given that the epidemiological situation in both countries is similar.

As a result of Gantar's warning that Croatia could find itself on the "red list" of countries, requiring a 14-day quarantine for people entering Slovenia, the government has been inundated with enquiries.

Despite the recent spike in numbers of new cases in Croatia and Slovenia, the border crossing regime will remain unchanged.

Kacin said that the big increase in the number of people infected in the past 24 hours is the culmination of events over the weekend, when the number of tests conducted and  the number of confirmed cases was lower.

We can only hope that the number of new cases will be significantly lower in the days to come, Kacin said.

The epidemiological situation in Slovenia is very good and it is similar to Croatia's, which is still on the list of epidemiologically safe countries, the director of the Centre for Infectious Diseases and National Institute of Public Health, Mario Fafangel, said.

He added that countries that have a poorer situation and are on the "red list" of countries includes Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo and North Macedonia.
