Croatia sees 99% fewer tourists in April than last year

There were 9,500 tourists in Croatia in April 2020, generating 392,000 overnight stays, which is a drop of 99 and 88 percent on the year respectively, according to data from eVisitor and the Croatian National Tourist Board.

Such results are a direct consequence of the coronavirus pandemic, the closure of borders and the complete stagnation of tourist movement.

April saw mostly domestic tourists, about 7,000 of them, or down 96% on the year, while there were 2,300 foreign tourists, down 99.8%.

Domestic tourists generated 281,000 overnight stays, down 38%, while foreign tourists generated 110,600 nights, down 96%.

Of the foreign tourists, the largest number of overnight stays was generated by those from Bosnia and Herzegovina, about 6%, followed by tourists from Slovenia, 4%.

Non-commercial accommodation accounted for nearly 60% of tourist turnover in April.

There were 646,000 tourists in Croatia in the first four months of 2020, a drop of 69% on the year, and they generated a total of 2.3 million overnight stays, a drop of 59.5%.

A negative trend can be expected in May and June as well, although it could be more moderate due to restrictive measures being relaxed since May 11, when restaurants and accommodation facilities were allowed to reopen, as were Croatian borders. (Hina)
