In 2018, 46.5% of the Croatians above 15 years of age travelled at least once, and those 1.7 million people spent 8.7 billion kuna (EUR 1.2 billion) on those several-day-long visits, according to the figures provided by the national statistical office (DZS). Last year, the Croatians made 4.3 million private visits, and nearly two thirds (more than 2.8 million or 64%) were visits inside Croatia, and 36% (1.6 million) were abroad.
The top destination for such trips abroad was Bosnia and Herzegovina, accounting for 21.7% of trips outside Croatia. Germany follows with a 13.3% share, and the other preferred destinations were Slovenia (9.6%), Italy (9.2%) and Austria (7.9%).
The most prevalent reason for those 4.3 million visits in 2018 was spending holidays in seaside resorts (1.4 million, or 31.2%), and visiting relatives and friends (1.3 million trips or 30.6%).
The average length of the stay was 5.7 nights.
Every one in two Croats above 15 did no trips in 2018, citing financial difficulties (51%), health reasons (28.4%) as well as lack of free time and too many family obligations (17.7%).
A total of 8.2% of the Croatian citizens above 15 did business trips last year. A total of 923,000 business trips were registered, and 45.9% were did inside Croatia whereas 54.1% were abroad.
Business travel expenses totalled HRK 3.7 billion (500 million euros).
